Lunacy

I was fortunate to have this poem selected to appear in the anthology Moon Lit Madness. I was unfortunate to botch the reading of the fifth stanza when I read at the launch party. Blerg!

Lunacy

The dark side of the moon
is a misnomer.
It is just as radiant
as brilliant

as the “light” side
but hidden
secret
concealed from casual gaze

by her more obvious face
causing the careless observer
to mistakenly conclude
she is merely two-dimensional

or attribute to mystique
what is nothing more than
intellectual incuriosity
—ignorance—

on the part of the observer
treating the observed
as an object
yet not objectively

but subject to whims
nonchalance
or miscalculation
of her true self.

At night I turn
and look at you
sleeping there
forehead moonlit

and wonder what madness
I would discover in myself
were I truly awake,
truly aware.
